Management Notes

I have created them over time in many iterations. I am publishing all of them but I will mention which ones are good and which all you can skip. However, note that these comments will be my personal opinion so use your discretion widely.

Besides, I think instead of my notes, my solved PYQs are much better for reference. Also, as per my observation if you do last 10 years papers, you can easily get 250+ marks. (I did 2016-20)

Special thanks to Bhavya Verma Sir (Rank 188, CSE 2015) whose notes I had extensively used in preparation. (Sir’s complete notes).

I have also used HRM notes from Bushra Bano Ma’am‘s Youtube video series. (Rank 277, CSE 2018)

First of all, please read the syllabus, probably the second most important thing after PYQs

Paper I

Managerial Functions and Process

My notes (Use these notes to create your own crisp notes. You can skip the book reading and instead read with Bhavya Sir’s notes)

Bhavya Verma Sir’s notes (Part 1, Part 2)

Organisational Behaviour and Design

My notes (Part 1 , Part 2) , largely based on Bhavya Verma Sir’s notes, just more colorful and refined. I think these are already concise and probably my best notes

Initial notes

Human Resource Management my notes based on Ashwathappa book. However, I created notes from video series of Bushra Bano Ma’am and I think they are more crisp and better.

Accounting for Managers one of my weakest areas, I will suggest not to use my notes, not of any use. Instead look at my PYQs they will be useful. But still adding link

Instead check out Bhavya Sir’s notes, though I haven’t used them

Financial Management again I did read Prasanna by marking important topics, but low relevance of my long notes instead check my PYQs or Bhavya Sir’s notes in accounting

Marketing Management use my notes to make your own crisp notes. Its based on Kotler

Paper II

Quantitative Techniques in Decision Making Though notes are not very useful but still mentioning them.

Initial version, Refined crisper version (Part 1, Part 2) avoid these

Certain sectional notes can be used Index numbers (from NCERT), LPP (ignore the sensitivity part in this doc, i have done it using Simplex but in UPSC only graphical is sufficient; I have done this part from G. Srinivasan Sir’s NPTEL videos), Sensitivity analysis

I had also created a formula cheat sheet , this could be really handy.

Production and Operations Management created some notes but again not very useful

Initial version, Refined version (Part 1, Part 2) avoid these

MRP could be used

Formula cheat sheet is really handy

Management Information System not very useful

Initial version, final version

Government Business Interface didn’t prepare many notes

Two notes from NCERTs – CSR, Entrepreneurship

Strategic Cost Management Check Bhavya Verma Sir’s notes prepared from there

Useful article that I found online

Strategic Intent should be read from original article of CK Prahlad

International Business not very good

Business Studies XI NCERT notes

Current Affairs

Management examples from current affairs

I prepared it from youtube and podcasts, largely from Finshots , but don’t think I used any example in final example.

My complete Google docs notes, they are already listed topic wise above.

Besides I was also preparing an overall summary notes but could not complete.

    1. Thanks Rupanshi for ur kind words. I love management as a subject and it will be real achievement if students with management background take this optional instead of trying out for others.

I will try to be active on this blog as well as on telegram group.

Kindly check the other sources page for the youtube videos that I had referred. The link for the same is below:

  4. Thank you so much for sharing these tips and sources with us. Can Management be considered a good optional for a candidate from non management background as well?

  5. Hi Prapti,

Management is a bit technical subject and requires an understanding of its basic concepts.
If u have a commerce or management background, then you can definitely go for it.
For others, due to lack of standardised material by various coaching institutes, it will be a lot more effort and limited rewards.
However, also check Ritesh Bhatt Sir’s quora answers https://www.quora.com/profile/Ritesh-Bhatt
He took management despite any background. You can even reach out to him why he took this decision.

  8. I was wondering if you posted your book list for the Management optional somewhere.. I am trying to map your notes with mine (for select subjects), so knowing the base material (and any reference book, if applicable) you followed to write the same would be super helpful.

    1. I haven’t posted it but they are mentioned in my typed notes at the start.
I had intentionally skipped the book list as I think you should refer to 2-3 toppers notes, complement it with PYQs and still if you want to value add then refer to the books.
I started with syllabus and then creating notes from books. It was a lot more time consuming as well as I found it less rewarding.
There is nothing better than solving all PYQs since 2013. As reiterated multiple times in blog, your paper is almost a repeat of last 10 year PYQs.
In my view, if you are in doubt then you can refer to any books on the subject that you studied in college or use the internet.
If you still want a book list, I will suggest refer to Manuj Jinal sir’s youtube video on management optional.

Also, I will also try to create a booklist page as multiple aspirants have been asking.

  10. Hi, Sir from where we can get model answers and test series for the same?

    Like

    1. You can check my model answers on this page https://managementupsc.wordpress.com/previous-year-paper-solutions/

There are test series by some coaching institutes but I will suggest you to instead focus on pyqs.

You can form a group to write pyqs and check in a peer group. Some had suggested that human peritus pyq solution compilation is good.

  11. hello sir, hope you’re doing well. Thank you so much for the guidance and study materials that you’ve provided here.
I’m giving my first ever attempt in the year 2024 and I’ve chose my optional as Management. I have started my preparation from august of this year and it took me one month to choose my optional. Now that I am sure about my optional subject, I do not have much time left to prepare myself for the examinations.
Can I prepare for my optional just by referring to your notes and your solved PYQ’s?
I don’t think I have the luxury of time to go through each and every standard book for this respective subject and then make notes.
Could you please share your opinion on this?
    Thank you đŸ™‚

  12. Hey Varshitha,
In my view you can score 250+ with my notes and PYQs. Refer to books only when you are struck somewhere or want to add on on some notes.
Try to do last 10 year PYQs or at least 5 Years.

  13. Hi Sir,
Request your guidance & suggestions on:
    1) Test series for Management optional. Also which one you took ?
    2) Is there any platform/compilation of toppers copy just like we have in GS and Essay ??

    Like

    1. I don’t think a test series is needed as last 10 year PYQs are good enough. Also I haven’t tried any so can’t comment.

I don’t think there is a compilation of topper answers anywhere. I could find a few on fraternityias page which I have posted on this link https://managementupsc.wordpress.com/my-research-on-management-optional-compilation-of-online-resources/

  15. Hello sir ,

I am extremely grateful to you for sharing these brilliant insights for management optional students. You are really doing alot for the students. Huge thanks to you.

My doubt is about the numerical part about the subject , what is its level or can we understand it by ourselves or do we need coaching for it and also if maths is not an issue to understand , since coaching is not really available for it. please help!

Also if you could also mention your telegram channel , it would be huge help for constant updates.

    Thank You .

    1. Numericals are highly repetitive so if u do last 10 years it should be good enough. Look for some coaching if u find it challenging or can search for a peer group as I did. I have solved for last 5 years or so, you take a reference from there.
I don’t have any telegram or other social media channel. This blog is the only medium.

  16. Hi Sir! Everyone has already mentioned about your notes being very helpful, which is so true. A problem that I am encountering is that there’s limited ways of verifying the practical problems in Management. Like today I had solved a problem but there’s no one with whom I can match my answer. The telegram group seems to be pretty inactive. My enthusiasm is going down. Kindly advise!

Also should we expect a graph paper in the Mains for LPP problems in graphical method?

    Thanks!

    1. hi nayanika,

try posting your answer on the group which is around 1000 members, usually someone answers your query. In my case almost all the time someone replied either in group but mostly DM. This will also help you to make a right group

yes, lpp question is usually graphical and there is a graph paper in answer sheet itself.
